How Can I Cope With Being Alone At Christmas?

You might be dreading Christmas this year because you aren’t in a relationship and you’re miles away from your friends and family. You’re starting to suspect that you’ll be spending Christmas all alone.
But don’t feel sorry for yourself just yet. Here are some ways that you can connect with others at Christmas:
- Look to your church: You’ll never be alone at Christmastime so long as you’re part of a lively, Bible-believing church!
- At the very least, you’ll be able to attend your church’s carols evening and Christmas services. There’s no better place to spend Christmas than among dedicated believers!
- If you’ve been going to church for a while then you’ll no doubt have friends who know that you’ll be alone this year and would be delighted to welcome you to join their Christmas celebrations
- But if you haven’t been going to your church for very long and don’t know anybody very well, many churches hold special Christmas dinners for members of the congregation who would otherwise be alone. You’ll be able to meet other Christians (and one of them could be someone special!) as well as celebrate Christmas without being alone
- Reach out to others: If you don’t receive any invitations to spend Christmas with a friend or someone from church, there are still ways that you can connect with others. You could volunteer to help at one of the many organisations that have been established for the homeless and needy. Volunteers often help to serve Christmas meals in soup kitchens, deliver food hampers to impoverished families, give Christmas presents to children who would otherwise go without, plus much more. You’ll gain so much when you give your time and energy to others!
But we’ve left the most important until last:
- Spend time with God: It’s important to remember that you’ll never be alone at Christmastime so long as you have a relationship with God and His Son Jesus Christ. If you can’t make it to church on Christmas morning, then hold your own service at home. Read the Christmas story from the Bible, worship God with a few songs (no one will be there to hear you!) and spend time in prayer:
- Thank God for coming to earth in human form 2000 years ago so that all men might have life everlasting
- Thank Him for all of the ways that He has blessed you
- Pray for those who are persecuted for their Christian faith and who are spending this Christmas in difficult conditions
When you spend Christmas serving God and other people, you’ll never be alone!
