What Should I Do When I Doubt God?

Doubting God

The devil actively strives to get us to doubt God and His Word. It’s one of his most effective tricks to try to get us to fall away from our faith. After all, whenever we disobey God, we obey him instead.

But the Bible teaches that He Who is in us (God) is stronger than he who is in the world (the devil). Here are some great Scriptures for when you doubt God and His promises:

  • Firstly, the Bible teaches that we will all experience difficulties in our life. Challenges are just a part of living in a fallen world:
    • ‘But now trouble comes to you, and you are discouraged; it strikes you, and you are dismayed’ (Job 4:5)
  • But the Bible also teaches that God hears us when we cry out to Him
    • ‘In my alarm I said, “I am cut off from your sight!” Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help’ (Ps 31:22). God always hears us, even when we feel isolated from Him through our circumstances or unbelief
    • ‘He replied, “You of little faith, why are you so afraid?” Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm’ (Mt 8:26). Our Lord is the God of Heaven and earth. He set all of creation in motion and it continues to obey Him. What have we to fear in this world that is subject to God’s authority? Nothing can happen to us that God doesn’t allow to happen – for our good and His glory
    • ‘Has his unfailing love vanished forever? Has his promise failed for all time?’ (Ps 77:8) These rhetorical questions emphasise God’s unfailing love and His promise. Both are completely reliable and eternal. This means that we can still believe God’s Word today as much as yesterday, last month, or fifty years ago
  • Finally, the Bible calls us to praise God, no matter what our circumstances
    • ‘Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior’ (Ps 42:5). Even when we’re suffering, we’re called to praise God who gave us life and saved us. We can’t see ahead, but He can, and He has everything under control
    • ‘In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials’ (1 Pe 1:6). We may have to suffer here on earth, but God promises eternal life in Heaven for all who put their faith in Him. God does have far better plans for us – whether here on earth, or when we reach Heaven
